MODERN SCREAM

Modern Scream was recorded with both staged acts involving Lily and an interviewer and live recordings. It was the first of her albums to be recorded in this format, the second being On Stage, which contains segments from her first Broadway show Appearing Nitely. The album's cover has a gatefold, making the entire cover look like a tabloid magazine. The front of the cover has false headlines involving the characters on the album, and is laid out like the cover of The National Enquirer. The cover folds out with false articles and advertisements, again laid out like a tabloid. The back of the record cover has an advertisement for the album itself, made to look like an old Marlbro ad. The US edition of the record has the sleeve opening on the right side of the second gatefold panel, the Canadian release has the record in a pocket on the INSIDE of the gatefold cover. Both covers are identical, with the exception of the Canadian cover having a mapel leaf on the Polydor logo (For POLYDOR CANADA records) on the back, a smaller front cover logo and a moc-track listing.

What is an 8-track tape?

An 8-track tape is a format made popular in the late 1960s and went until the early 1980s. It is a plastic cartridge with an opening at one end, exposing a section of 1/4" wide tape (The same that is used in reel-to-reel tape machines). The cartridge is inserted into a player, which uses a rubber pinch roller to pull the tape along. The tape is a continuous loop, with both ends connecting to eachother with a metal splice. As the metal splice moves over the sensors inside the player, the head moves down one position. There are 4 positions, each one consisting of 2 tracks (one for the left and one for the right speaker). 2 stereo tracks per program (head position) times 4 total programs equals 8 tracks. A more detailed page on 8-tracks can be found at
8-Track Heaven.

What is a radio station EP?

A radio station EP is a 10" or more commonly 7" vinyl record with a shortened version of an upcoming album on it. The record will usually only have 4 songs, two on each side. They are sent free of charge to radio stations to promote an upcoming album, and are supposed to be returned to the record company after a certain period of time. A lot of stations hold onto these records, or DJs take them from the studios, and they will end up on the
rec.music.marketplace.vinyl newsgroup (newsreader required) or on eBay, though the promotional records are getting harder to find there because there is a question as to weather they are legal to sell or not. This is the came case with 7", 10" and 12" promotional singles, with more of the 12" singles coming from clubs than from radio stations. Most promo 7" singles are pre-1990, I can only assume that because after that most radio stations switched to another format.

Information with a "*" by it denotes information only available on the cover of the vinyl LP edition of the album.

A note on vinyl etchings:

The etchings on the lead out groove of a vinyl record correspond to the catalog number of the record, the plant it was pressed at and the person(s) who mastered the album/single. Sometimes the records have a symbol on them representing the plant at which they were pressed, sometimes they just have a code which corresponds to the plant at which they were pressed, and sometimes they have a phrase etched into the vinyl (For example, the MODERN SCREAM LP has the phrase "HOW AM I GONNA MAKE PUDDING WITH JUST RAISINS?" on side 1, a reference to the LUCILLE THE RUBBER FREAK act, and "DO IT WITH THE DOOR OPEN - MARCH 30, 1971" on side 2, a reference to SISTER BOOGIE WOMAN). The date March 30, 1971 referenced on the MODERN SCREAM LP is a bit of a mystery to me. Lily Tomlin began collaborating with her friend and future life partner Jane Wagner in mid-1971, and this could possibly be what is referenced by the date, but I'm only speculating.
